Move 28. White played Qxe5?? from a winning attack.

He explains each blunder.

Every explanation is checked against the board before he says it: what the move gave up, the line that punishes it, and the move that was there instead.

Coach Bjorn

Coach Bjorn

why your move was a mistake

You had a winning attack, but taking on e5 with your queen throws it away. Black recaptures with the queen, you take back with your rook, and the queens come off the board. Even though you win a pawn in the trade, your most dangerous piece is gone. An 83% winning position drops to a roughly level endgame where Black's rooks spring to life. When you are attacking a king, keep your queen on. Trading it off, even for a pawn, lets your opponent escape.

Free gets five of these a day. Premium gets up to a hundred, on puzzles and on full game reviews.

Game Review ยท move 19

19. Bc2 ??

Asking about this position

Why was this a blunder?

Coach Bjorn

Coach Bjorn

Your Bc2 left your bishop on h6 hanging. A hanging piece is one that can be taken for nothing: no piece defends it, or the defender is worth more than the attacker. Their gxh6 takes your bishop on h6, and that was the threat. Your better move Bf4+ reveals a check from your queen on h3 and gets out of the attack. Before your own idea, ask: if they could move again right now, where would they go?

Ask him about any move.

Open a game in Game Review, pick a move, and ask. He answers from that board: what your move allowed and the move that was there instead.
